Camp Hill Launches Challenge for Children

child on swingRecent surveys from Play England and the National Trust have found that today’s children are in danger of never experiencing the pleasure and excitement of playing out amongst nature. Camp Hill Country Estate in Bedale has launched a campaign to encourage young adventurers to get back to nature with their ‘Top 40 things to do outdoors before October’ initiative to reconnect with nature…before it’s too late.

The survey commissioned by Play England this month found that less than a quarter of children play outside unlike over half of adults who reported playing outside at least seven times a week in their childhood. The National Trust also revealed that if children do not form a connection with the great outdoors before they are 12, they are less likely to do so at all.  Robert Ropner owner of Camp Hill Estate said: “My childhood was full of adventures, climbing trees and building dens and I really think it is a sad state of current society that children’s greatest idea of fun is playing on an Xbox or watching YouTube.  “Camp Hill has something for everyone, but we have found that children sometimes find it difficult toCamp Katur -30 know what adventures to create and even how to play in the great outdoors.

We’ve taken our inspiration from the National Trust’s ‘Top 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ ’ initiative and launched the ‘Top 40 things to do at Camp Hill before October’ campaign to give children lots of outdoor adventures.  “Activities we’re looking for youngsters to tick off the list include climbing a tree, building a shelter, hunting for bugs and making mud pies. Granted some parents won’t thank us for some of these activities but we know the kids will love it!”
