I’m reviewing a book that I have recently read called Immortal City by Scott Speer. It’s a supernatural romance that isn’t too sickly, gooey and not at all similar to a certain book series involving a sparkling creature of the night.
The book is about a young girl called Maddy and an Angel called Jackson, who both resides in a city dedicated to Angels, earning it the name “The Immortal City”. The storyline itself is almost like a Romeo and Juliet with the two not able to be together because of Jackson’s lifestyle. During the book, a serial killer is killing off Angels according to their stars, by ripping off their wings (making them mortal) and then killing them. Jackson is next.
The star-crossed lovers run away together with the Angels in swift pursuit and run into what seems like a demon in Maddy’s high school. They both escape that and then get cornered on top of a building with the serial killer. Will Jackson or Maddy survive? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
In my opinion, the book itself was quite enjoyable and not too long, but I think that the plot was a bit rushed in the end and too much time was spent in back-story for just one book. The ending, yet again, was very rushed and sudden but was left open for a possible sequel, which would be well received and nearly mandatory.
I would recommend this book to teens everywhere, whether you’re a Twilight fan or not, as it is a completely different story line and will suit most reading tastes.
